Open Source Software Resources

Open source software resources help to educate people about what the programs can do for them.

The Open Source Initiative – This is the official website of the nonprofit organization that began in California with the intention of substantially contributing to the development of open source software. This organization is also responsible for reviewing and approving licenses for compliance to the open source philosophy and is responsible for convening with various entities to discuss the virtues and viability of open source software and management.

OpenOffice.org — This site mainly concentrates on Open Office 3, which is a office software suite that acts as a replacement of Microsoft Office. Resulting from over 20 years of open source collective software engineering, Open Office is a true manifestation of the open source spirit. This website also includes other projects by these developers, support, relevant news, and a discussion forum.

Open Source Software for Windows – This is a comprehensive list of open source software available for a variety of platforms. It is stratified by type and includes links to alternate downloads as well as other sites with similar offerings.

Open Source Windows – This is a list of open source software that can be used to replace proprietary software for use on the Windows platform.

Open Source Mac – This is a list of open source software that can be used to replace proprietary software for use on the Mac OS platform.

Mozilla.org – This is the official website of the prolific organization Mozilla that has head up so many successful open source projects to date.

The GNU Operating System – This is the official website of the organization that arguably started it all: GNU. This website includes the organization’s philosophy, licenses, downloads, documentation, ways to join the Free Software Foundation, and ways to help support GNU.

Blender.org – This is the official website of one of the premier open source software for 3D animation.

Tigris.org – This open source community offers a compendium of open source software engineering tools as well as an internal open source network and projects completed through Tigris.

Open Source Applications Foundation – This is the official website of the Chandler Project of the Open Source Applications Foundation. Chandler is a notepad/organizer application designed as an open source workplace management solution. This site includes ways to contact the organization, a press kit, an FAQ, job opportunities, people involved in the organization, and links to downloads including the Chandler desktop client and the Chandler server.
