Without turning a page, and with barely a second longer than it take to think of search term, a list of possibilities pops up on the screen. Too much information? Then narrow the search or filter it with more specific words. Will the Yellow Pages do that?  No, it’s can’t. Not without looking at the index—now where did they put that in this year’s edition?

This year’s Yellow Pages phone directory will stay in absolutely new condition. It will probably never even shed its protective plastic cover. It will however, replace last year’s volume which is in absolutely mint condition still.

Reports have found that in the United Kingdom, there is a major gap when it comes to learning between rich and poor children! Unfortunately, children that come from poor house holds are twice as likely to be deprived in furthering their education because of non internet use at home. The e-Learning foundation has found that over one million students, from grades K-12 do not have internet access at home. This is tied into over two million children who don’t have access to the internet at all!

The Government Spending Survey shows that the learning gap between the rich and poor children is as much as 78 percent. The statistics show that teens make up at lease 65 percent of the networking sites that are online today. These include Facebook and Twitter, with the age bracket being for 13-17 years old. Carr’s book, “The Shallows”, suggests that the Internet is causing a change in the modern brain, and that people can’t think as well as they used to. Of course, not everyone agrees that the Internet is bad for you, or that it will make you stupid. The book was met with criticism from scientists who disagreed with the accuracy of Carr’s brain studies. Also, Carr’s argument was more cultural than scientific, and therefore most of his evidence was considered somewhat anecdotal. Still others claim that computers can make people smarter, since they do the boring, simplistic calculation, and allow more time for the mind to work on other problems.

Leonard Kleinrock of MIT had published a paper on packet switching theory the year before, and he put out his first book on the subject in 1964. He stated that it was possible for computers to communicate through packets, rather than circuits, as they had done in the past. Packet switching, which is a network system composed of packets of information (or “message blocks”), lead to improved bandwidth and faster responses. The information was divided randomly into small segments and routed individually. The problem with this system was that it was prone to failure as there was no duplication at the beginning.

The first version of the Internet went live in 1969, with a network called ARPAnet. ARPA stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency, which was a military section that worked during the Cold War to develop weapons and systems. ARPAnet was built to safeguard the flow of information between military networks, and it worked off of a new protocol, called Network Control Protocol (NCP). ARPAnet, in the beginning, only included four computers at the following locations: Stanford Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and the University of Utah. The first Internet exchange was between Stanford and UCLA; however, the computer at UCLA crashed. ARPAnet was responsible for the invention of electronic mail (email), as well as file transfer protocol (ftp), which allows bulk information to be sent.

The term open source software, or OSS, was born in 1998 to replace the phrase “free software.” The free software movement, or FSM, actually began in 1983, with the help of computer programmer Richard Stallman. Of course, the hacker culture of the 1970′s spawned the ideas that created the foundation of FSM, including the emphasis on sharing and questioning.

Richard Stallman launched the GNU project in 1983, and found the Free Software Foundation in 1985. He wrote a number of essays on the importance of free software, and he also wrote the GNU Public License, which is still a widely used free software license. Stallman does not approve of the phrase “open source software” because it does not acknowledge freedom, and he believes that freedom is what makes software valuable. This is slightly ironic, because Stallman’s free software movement inspired the open source software movement. Stallman meant “free” as in “freedom,” not free as in without cost.

The individuals who coined the phrase “open source software” thought that it would appeal to the business world, and make more sense to non-programmers. The word “free” could be anything, as in “free love”. In 1998, Netscape announced their intention to release the source code for Navigator. In response to this suggestion, a group of individuals in Palo Alto decided that open source software should be the future term. The term free, they thought, sounded non-commercial.

Most people don’t distinguish between the free software movement and the open source software movement, as they both are based on non-secretive code. Certain individuals believe that the open source movement actually started in 1969, when the Internet was invented.

The Open Source Initiative, or OSI, suggested that releasing code was better for businesses. The group hoped to demonstrate the appeal of open source in a practical way, and for this reason they sought to eliminate the term “free.” Bruce Perens tried to register “open source” as a trademark, but he failed. Still, Netscape did release the code for Navigator, and was one of the first corporations to acknowledge the value of open source code.

Apple Inc. has a muddled relationship with open source software: the company supports open source, generally, but Apple is also know to be rather tight-fisted. Apple sells hardware, and therefore, their involvement in software is meant to promote the use of Apple products generally, In the nineties, when Apple was struggling under the thumb of Microsoft, the company realized that Mac computers wouldn’t appeal to users if Internet Explorer still ruled the web. Apple thus makes a serious effort to push forward significant Mac software. Embracing open source was a big step in the right direction for Apple.

Apple has an open source site which includes a good chunk of source code for OS X. The site contains archived material since 2000. OS X and iOS, Apple’s main operating systems, are based on FreeBSD (free code developed by a large group of people). Apple has contributed a lot of their source code to the open source community, in a seemingly generous way. Apple also lets anyone develop applications for Macs (and iPhones and iPads), and a lot of high quality software for OS X is open source. For example, Firefox, Cyberduck and Adium are open source applications developed for Macs. The open source community encourages sharing ideas and improving code, which certainly benefits Apple due to the constant creation of innovative and functional software.

Apple claims that they were the first company to embrace Open Source and make it an essential part of their software development strategy. Programmers are able to learn from all the source code Apple displays, and the projects Apple puts forward. However, Apple doesn’t embrace open source 100%, as not all of their OS X code is exposed, but they are one certainly avid open source supporters. After all, open source software, in many ways, probably saved Apple’s business model. By helping Apple to create free and effective software to use on Mac computers, Apple was able to sell their hardware and turn a profit.

There are three major software types, as defined by most computer systems, though these different kinds of software are not always distinct. The first is system software. System software includes window systems (also known as windowing systems), which are part of graphical user interface (GUI) and the desktop environment which supports the keyboard, mouse, basic graphics as well as fonts. System software also includes servers and utilities. Server operating systems include Linux and Solaris (both of which came from Unix). Utility software is meant to maintain the computer (it includes the necessary program updates), and most operating systems have utility software pre-installed. System software also includes all operating systems and device drivers. A device driver allows the software and hardware to interact; for example, a device driver works with scanners, printers and video adapters.

A second major software type is programming software. Programming software allows programmers to create programs. Text editors, used for editing basic text files, are a part of programming software, and can be used as source code editors. Link editors, or linkers, connect different parts of a program. Interpreters are the component that puts the written code into action. Compilers translate the source code into programming language. Debuggers test and remove bugs from the program. All components of programming software are related to the creation and writing of software.

Application software is the third major type of software. Application software is not directly related to the computer; it is user-oriented. For example, application software includes video games and word processing. It also includes the Internet. Other kinds of application software include specialized software, such as quantum chemistry software, molecular modeling software, medical software and educational software. Databases are also considered application software. Databases can be defined based on the type of content they contain, which may be bibliographic, statistical or text. Database management systems allow for the creation of data, as well as the maintenance and the ability to search.

The introduction of the Internet and computers over the past few decades has changed the way people communicate with one another, which has changed the way businesses function, the way countries relate, the way societies work, shop, eat, and so on and so forth. The impact of this new technology is so profound that it is impossible to summarize its overall influence. Computers and the Internet are certainly some of the most significant inventions of humankind, if not the most remarkable of the past few decades. Few experts believe that there are inventions more important than the Internet (and those who do generally point to the invention of tools that led to the Internet in the end).

The easy access of worldwide information is a key component of the Internet. It is infinitely easier to research any topic, even obscure ones that couldn’t be found in a library. More specialized research, such as medical research, is readily available. The Internet allows for the collaboration of experts and can lead to significant advances in various professions. Wikipedia is another example of the value of collaborative knowledge. The Internet also helps spread information such as news very quickly, as well as rumors and made-up facts. The spread of information has a significant impact on politics, as does the ability to campaign directly.

The Internet has also made life more convenient for many people. It is much easier to travel, since a user can by airline tickets, research hotels, and rent a car. It is easier to shop for the best pair of shoes, or the right car. It is also possible to buy almost anything online, including homemade goat cheese from another country. It is easier to keep in touch with friends and family, due to email, and social networking sites have made it easier to have a large network of friends. In fact, the Internet has created a whole new way of being social. Computers are used at home, at school and in the workplace, and, today, it’s rather difficult to remember life without the Internet.

This year, Google is releasing Chrome OS, a new web browser based on open source software that’s supposed to be extremely fast. The fastest computer takes approximately 45 seconds to start up, due to the programs in the operating system (it has to go though each of them one by one). Google decided that the web browser should be the operating system, as the operating system was rather unnecessary, since most people only use their computers for the Internet. Chrome OS is essentially a redesigned computer, which allows the user to check email, listen to music, and all the other things people do on the Internet. None of it is actually stored on the computer, though (it’s all on the Internet), and therefore the updates don’t happen on the individual computer, and it boots-up very quickly.

Another benefit of having all applications within the browser and off the computer is security. Each application on Chrome OS is contained within it’s own little box, and viruses can’t get in. Chrome OS is based on Linux, and the programmers are working with Ubuntu, GNU and other open source experts to develop the source code. Anyone can give feedback on the design as well as the code, and the code is released as it’s developed. Thanks to open source software, many more minds will be available to help adopt the Chrome browser for Mac OS X and Linux. Chrome OS is also using new hardware for their open source software, and set out certain hardware requirements for their browser.

Google hopes that Chrome OS will be very intuitive, and allow users to access their favorite applications easily and quickly. There will be different tabs with the applications the user chooses. “Panels” will allow computer users to access a window where they can stream music from the Internet or create shared documents. Chrome OS can also go into fullscreen mode more naturally, to simplify the image for reading. Chrome OS allows users to move easily through different windows, and it’s also possible to drag and drop.

AT&T recently declared that paid traffic was a part of the initial concept behind the creation of the Internet. Computer users, they declared, were meant to pay for special, priority access. AT&T claims that the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) added “DiffServ” to allow for paid prioritization on the Internet.

The IETF’s current chairman, Russ Housley, said that AT&T is incorrect, and that the DiffServ was meant to allow network providers decide how to deal with Internet traffic, but there was never any reference to payment. The Federal Communications Commission also suggested that Internet neutrality is the best way, and Google and Verizon agreed on open Internet access. They are obviously not too pleased with AT&T.

DiffServ was meant for a variety of purposes, and the original document includes the possibility of “differentiated pricing.” However, it’s unclear as to whether the founders were suggesting that the Internet should had a divided pricing scheme, or if they were observing the possibility of different prices. Also, the differentiated pricing could be for the users or the network providers or businesses; it wasn’t clearly stated.

AT&T doesn’t have much to go on apart from this old quote, but they are determined to push the priority pay argument. There are no laws to determine this issue, as the Internet is still so new, so AT&T is turning to history for help.

AT&T believes that any Net neutrality plan that prevents them from engaging in “paid prioritization” is not in line with the principles of the Internet. AT&T declared that they already have many customers who would be willing to pay a higher fee for faster Internet access. However, if telecommunications providers can set different prices for different users, Net neutrality will diminish, and some individuals believe the practice is illegal or unfair. The Free Press, an advocacy group, claimed that AT&T’s proposal was discriminatory, and that the Internet should remain equal and open.

Ubuntu is open source software, originally based on GNU/Linux. Ubuntu means “I am what I am because of who we all are” and “humanity to others.” It is an old African phrase, and with this mindset, Ubuntu shares software within the community.

Ubuntu provides an operating system for computers; it has an easy installation process and is user-friendly. The company Canonical Ltd in the United Kingdom, which is own by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African entrepreneur, sponsors Ubuntu. The software is free and open source because Canonical benefits from the contributions of programmers in the community, and makes money by providing customer service and technical support to Ubuntu users.

The GNOME desktop inspired the first version of Ubuntu, and now there is a server edition, Kubuntu and Edubuntu. Edubuntu is the education edition of Ubuntu. Canonical releases a new version of Ubuntu every six months. Every two-years, Ubuntu releases a version with long-term technical support.

Ubuntu is not run by Canonical, rather, Ubuntu programmers and volunteer leaders take responsibility for different aspects of Ubuntu. Other companies also help support Ubuntu. Some vendors sell computers with Ubuntu pre-installed, including Dell, System 76 and Bravium Computers (a South African company).

The first release of Ubuntu was in 2004; it was a branch of code from the Debian project. Canonical provided funding for the project in 2005 with $10 million USD, and created the Ubuntu Foundation. The foundation is considered a backup fund for emergencies (in case Canonical stops supporting Ubuntu).

Ubuntu has been well-received around the world. In 2005, Ubuntu won the Reader Award for best Linux distribution. In 2007, Ubuntu won the Bossie Award for Best Open Source Client. In January 2009, they reportedly had over ten million users. In France, the police are currently installing Ubuntu on their workstations, which will save them 70% on their IT budgets. In April of this year, Chris Kenyon, the vice president of Canonical, estimated that Ubuntu had 12 million users.

The chip maker Intel will invest over $30 million in software companies. There are four companies, and three of them are cloud computing companies, including Adaptive Computing, Joyent and Nexant. Cloud computing allows users to save their data on the web. Ciranova, the fourth company, makes software for companies involved in creating chips for high definition multimedia, broadband and mobile web.

Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ) has recently decided to buy ArcSight Inc, a security-software maker. They will pay around $1.5 billion for acquisition of the company. This is the second small technology company that HP has bought in the past two months. The company agreed to pay $2.3 billion for 3PAR Inc, a storage maker. After purchasing ArcSight, Hewlett-Packard shares rose substantially. HP has announced that they will acquire a series of companies, mostly in technology and software.

OpenView Venture Partners invested $9.5 million in Kareo, a healthcare software company. Kareo provides medical billing software of physicians. OpenView’s investment will help Kareo enhance customer service, boost marketing strategies and improve the management team. Kareo is growing quickly, as it offers a simple, affordable solution to the complicated medical billing techniques in the United States. OpenView venture partners focuses on high-growth software. The company has invested in a number of other software companies, including Acronis, Aelita, Balihoo, ExactTarget, Loyalty Lab, Open-E and Zmags.

This year, Google acquired the travel software company ITA, which is a flight information software company. Rather than pointing searchers to other sites, Google is showing their own results and directing users to restaurants and services directly. The flight software company ITA will allow them to break into the travel market. This move could alter the travel industry. Also, Microsoft, a rival in travel search market, uses ITA software. Companies like Kayak, Expedia and maybe even some airlines might resist this acquisition. Recently, the justice department questioned the Google’s acquisition of ITA software, noting that it might have a negative influence the online travel industry. Google, however, maintains that their goal is to improve travel related search results.

Open source software is free, but that is not the only benefit. Open source software has liberal license terms and allows the users a lot of flexibility and no vendor lock-in. Open source software also comes with the support of a community and future innovations are likely. Sometimes, thousands of programmers are involved with the software.

Open source software is dynamic and constantly evolving, since many programmers are fixing bugs and adding features. Rather than requiring costly updates, open source updates are free. Also, open source software encourages business owners to actually look at code, rather than thinking of it as mysterious magic performed by programmers. Open source applications are available for a variety of uses, including ecommerce, word processors and entertainment.

There are, of course, a few disadvantages to using open source software. Sometimes open source software projects fizzle out, as is the case with commercial software. The biggest problem with open source software is that there is no timely support system to help you. You might find a bug in the program that you will need to pay someone to fix. Because programmers generally work on open source software out of their own free will and on their own time, you can’t expect them to help you.

And, of course, if there’s a particular addition that would improve your business or personal use, you may or may not find any support or interest in this feature from the community. Again, you will likely have to pay for it. However, given that you will not spend money purchasing software, you will probably still save money by using open source software.

It also depends, though, on the particular software you are considering. Some open source software is reliable, while newer programs can be more difficult to work with. Also, if there aren’t any programmers working on the software to provide updates, you might be in trouble. It helps to check the forums to see if the community is active.

The government of the United Kingdom has asserted its commitment to the use of open source software. Traditionally users of proprietary programs, the UK government has now asserted their intention to choose open source options over paid for programs in situations where the two alternatives are near in price.

Explaining their decision, a UK cabinet member told parliament that the futureproof nature of open source technologies such as databases, e-mail hosting, web browsers, and other applications made them a preferable choice over their pay to use counterparts. As a result government procurement officials will soon be issued with guidelines on selecting software that is biased in favor of open source options.

The decision, which is an extension of the open source plan put in place by the previous administration in 2004, comes at a time when the newly elected conservative leaders of the country are making spending cuts across the board.  Officials have stopped short of placing a figure on the possible financial savings of this new policy.

The move has been made only months after governments across the world were forced to make swift software decisions after concerns were raised over the security of some proprietary programs, including Microsofts Internet Explorer 6, with some administrations placing a blanket ban on their usage for official purposes. They were also ordering revamps of their approach to software procurement as a result.

In some countries, a security crisis precipitated a seismic shift in software sourcing, with a number of governments setting aside specific open source software budgets to ensure and evolution of the technologies used.  The sway towards open source answers for official use in Europe is currently being led by the Dutch government, who are pushing for this sort of software to be used in a range of applications across the spectrum of their services.

The Internet is a large collection of different size networks. Nobody owns it. Each of the networks connect to form the unique system called the Internet. The name “Internet” comes from the concept of multiple connected networks.

Each computer (including yours) is part of a network, and is connected through an Internet Service Provide (ISP). It is possible that your office computer is part of a local area network (LAN), but it still connects through an ISP (most of the time). The ISP is usually connected to a larger network, which might be part of another larger network, and all the networks make up the Internet. No network is the top network in the system, but some of the largest networks connect through Network Access Points (NAPS).

The NAPS are a crucial part of the Internet, and so are the routers. Routers send different information to the appropriate destination. Routers also prevent the wrong information from being sent (this may include large amounts of unnecessary data, for example). Routers are like special computers responsible for routing information appropriately. Also, backbones are another important part of the Internet. Backbones are fiber optic trunk lines which connect through various NAPS. They make the Internet function around the world.

Each computer on the web has an Internet Protocol Address (IP), which states the location of the computer. IP addresses usually appear as dotted decimal numbers to humans, but they communicate in binary form with one another. In 1983, the University of Wisconsin came up with a Domain Name System (DNS), which allowed names to forward to IP addresses. People today navigate the Internet through domain names (such as AsiaOsc.org). Domain names create Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), which are entered into the browser of the Internet to direct the user to a given location.

The Internet is still relatively young, and there are few rules and regulations at this point. The Internet Society (ISOC) was founded in 1992 to support worldwide cooperation and promote Internet technologies. It was also meant to be a guiding legal presence for the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

OpenOffice is open source software that rivals Microsoft Office. These two programs are considered the key players in the word processor world. OpenOffice offers an Excel compatible spreadsheet (called Calc), and a Word compatible processor (called Writer). It even has Power Point presentation software (Impress), a drawing program (Draw), and the ability to safe PDF files. Furthermore, with OpenOffice you can create form letters and send them to addresses in a data base. OpenOffice also includes a context-sensitive html editor and graphics tools.

Microsoft Office and OpenOffice are actually quite similar. Microsoft offers a few other programs in the package, including Groove, which allows users to create flyers and brochures. In any case, it’s worth giving OpenOffice a free try before investing in Microsoft software.

There are significant benefits to using open source. Open source web development is a term heard commonly today. Not all products are like this, of course, as most developers do not want to make the process of copying their product easy. The open source philosophy of life first started in the computer community. Back in the old days, the developers of computer software had a tendency toward a large amount of competition with one another. WordPress is the most important blogging software in our day. It is a highly intuitive, complex backend but simple interface software that lets people create and manage blogs for free.
