There are significant benefits to using open source. Open source web development is a term heard commonly today. With this type of coding system, the user is able to see the source code of the product. Not all products are like this, of course, as most developers do not want to make the process of copying their product easy. However, when open source is used, this allows engineers to better tailor their product to their needs and helps new products come to light faster.

Key Advantages

There are numerous advantages to using open source, too. The first of which is the lower cost. Open source web development programs are far less expensive than name brand products with limited use. There are no license agreements to purchase when this type of system is used. It is not necessary to invest in a larger server or more powerful server, either. For many new businesses or those looking to expand quickly, these costs savings are a key reason to use open source.

In addition to this benefit, open source systems are also highly helpful when it comes to checking for vulnerabilities. Professionals can easily scan the system for errors. Anyone can check the source code and find errors. By fixing those errors, the website runs better. Open source also helps by allowing more than one person to check the security aspects of the system. The codes used by one person can be used by another person right away. This enhances both users’ abilities.

With open source, not just one person owns the information and the coding. Rather, anyone can use them. This is similar to finding great buys at your favorite store and then finding a promotional code for them, such as a JCPenney coupon codes. You can share the information with everyone else and everyone can benefit from that code.

Open Source operating systems are mostly based on Unix, solely because the MS-Dos is Microsoft’s personal property. But lately Unix based operating systems have come a long way from their text based user interface. Unix and Linux based operating systems are good enough for a beginner as well as an experienced person. They are the operating system of choice for software designers as well as single users who want to avoid going the illegal way to save costs.

The perceived notion that Linux and Unix based operating systems are only good for geeks is fast changing with the incredibly swift user interfaces and the higher security with Linux based operating systems. We all know how insecure Windows are; you can not use it without installing a good antivirus.

One of the most popular Linux based operating systems is Ubuntu. Ubuntu along with Debian and Linux mint have a lot of similarities, hence all of them have similar features. Ubuntu is fast becoming the fastest base of Linux users and is currently on the top. Some reports suggest that it is on par with Apple’s Mac OSX. The best part about Ubuntu is the pre loaded software that make the task of shifting from Windows to Linux way easier. It can be run without installing through the Live CD or can co-exist along with Windows based operating system.

Another extremely coder popular Linux based system comes from no one other than the father of Linux, Linus Torvalds. This is a Red Hat based OS which was discontinued. This OS has huge MNC’s as its clients and is also found in many ATMs, scientific instruments and other custom designed machinery.

OpenSUSE’s installation is not as simple as the others but when it comes down to user friendliness, no one beats OpenSUSE. It can be easily set up in a multi-monitor setting and has Windows like user interface.

The open source philosophy of life first started in the computer community. Back in the old days, the developers of computer software had a tendency toward a large amount of competition with one another. At one point, a single person working on an ordinary computer could produce the latest killer app of the day, on a budget no larger than his electric bill and the price of the “hacker soul food” that kept his mind operating at its peak. When the internet came along, however, it ushered in a whole new way of thinking, when it came to the way in which software was developed.

In the new way of development, which became known as open source, the code of a program was shared amongst many developers. This was a necessary phenomenon, as increasingly complex computers made the success of a “lone wolf” programmer a more and more rare outcome. What is truly interesting is that, as time went on, more and more parts of life have opened up to the open source philosophy of sharing and open collaboration. You have to wonder how well this will end up reshaping the formerly very competitive biotechnology industry, as the concept gains further traction around the world.

Even the fashion industry has caught up to the notion of there being a community that influences the fashion of the day. Originally, Baby Phat was just a t-shirt that was handed out as a bit of promotional swag at a fashion show. But when a whole bunch of people fell in love with the concept, it took on a life of its own. With open source now also a branding mindset, the future is looking open to just about anything.

WordPress is the most important blogging software in our day. It is a highly intuitive, complex backend but simple interface software that lets people create and manage blogs for free. It was created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and a few collaborators as a setup to help people blog on the internet. One of the pivotal decisions that Matt and others took is to make WordPress truly open source, which means that people all over the world could collaborate with each other to develop WordPress.

This open source characteristic has resulted in WordPress, or WP as it is known as, being developed in unimaginably various number of ways. Every day, some developer somewhere is bringing out a new feature that could be used by everyone on WordPress. This is the famous plugins structure of WP, which is one of the largest collaborative software venture ever accomplished.

The basic features of WP are its quick installation in three ways, as a off hosted blog, as a privately hosted blog of an website, and as a CMS driven website itself. Other features are themes; these are collaboratively created interfaces which sit on top of the wordpress software and allow people as much flexibility and customization as desired.

Then there are the plugins, which, as has been described, are useful little applets that people have created to add interesting and needed features to wordpress. The plugin sits separately from the main software, and is used just like an enhancement.

WordPress per se consists of pages pages, posts pages, categories, comments and a host of content driven aspects. Pages pages are static pages that are used to retain relatively permanent content, posts pages are where daily entries are made, comments are just what they seem to be, public comments, and categories are how all these are organized into classes.

Using this basic setup, and a short learning curve, any Tom Dick and Harry can create a blog today, and open a potentially important doorway to the world wide web.

Almost all the software for which you pay dearly for with your hard earned money has a cheaper and geekier alternative. These are open source software which are slightly harder to find but come with their very own benefits, of which economical advantage is the obvious one. Open source software take their birth from Linux operating systems, where there is no software that you pay for. The open source software are either knock off copies of the original software or just plain innovative piece of coding which makes things way simpler. And besides, they make you seem geekier and people may be considered as wizards among geek developers if their software is widely accepted and used regularly.

Although huge corporations such as Google and Autodesk give away software for free for brand image building, open source software differ from company given software in that these software are developed by volunteers for their personal use and are released by them. These volunteers might never have purchased a single software in their entire lives because of the belief that like freedom of speech people should have freedom to control their own data.

Some of the extremely popular open source software are software such as Firefox, VLC Media Player, Open Office, ClamWin Antivirus, True Crypt and many more. It’s certain that you use a couple of these every day and are very used to them. Most of you will admit that they are way more useful than their paid counter parts which have many features that you never even use. They come with a General public license, which means so long as you do not use these software in any part of commercially selling software, it is completely free to use and distribute. So next time before you enter your credit card details to purchase a software online, stop once to check if there is an open source alternative for the same.

You probably do not watch that much television as you used to. With the advent of high speed internet and multimedia streaming things have changed a lot. And with the introduction of dedicated HD multimedia streaming devices, the traditional television has never been the same. Media streaming is a way of transmitting and receiving audio and video signals over a broadband network. It can include streaming of live shows or recorded audio and video. Media steaming took ground in the year 2000 with the availability of high internet speeds and advanced protocols which allow for streaming high amounts of data and avoid under run. The first user content generated popular media streaming site of the 21st century was You Tube. Although the content quality was not on par with television standards, people took to it because of the option to see what you want when you want instead of continuous streaming. There are two different types of streaming; true streaming and on demand streaming. True streaming is similar to television where a continuous party generated content and no space is required in the form of storage, whether live or recorded is streamed continuously over a broadband connection. In on demand streaming, progressive streaming is employed where content is user selected and this requires the downloaded audio and video to be stored on the hard drive temporarily.

Many commercial multimedia streamers have been brought into the market along with the many high definition streaming websites. Some of the most popular multimedia streamers in recent time are TiVo, Boxee, Sayabas, Marshal, PopBox, Western Digital Live Plus, Seagate Free Agent Theatre HD, along with Xbox 360 and PS3, Apple TV, SONOS and now a fresh entrant into the multimedia streaming band wagon is Google. Microsoft has plans to introduce into the market its own version of a multimedia streamer. The availability of multimedia streaming on mobile phones has brought about many mobile OS specific applications that provide free HD content anywhere.

Like it or not but it seems that cloud computing is here to stay. With the high economic advantages and low maintenance associated with setting up and maintaining a fast growing IT infrastructure, many companies are going for cloud computing. And in contrast to perceived misunderstanding about low security, the security on online computing is very high and can be beefed up or loosened on demand.

Almost all of the software giants like Microsoft, Google, Adobe, IBM and others believe the time for cloud computing has already begun. With the entry of open source based cloud computing software this has only given more tonic to the rapidly strengthening field. Cloud computing includes added advantage of real time networking and communicating, which is very essential in a large multinational corporation. With visible advantage is increased productivity and high cost savings admitted by many companies, it is self-promoting itself to becoming a necessity of every corporation, big or small. Cloud computing has also been introduced into developing architectural designs and animated games and movies. It also avoids the need to buy powerful game consoles by remote processing all the game dynamics and only screening multimedia content to your desktop.

Unix based cloud computing models have been introduced which further reduce the costs associated with a rented cloud computing for software-as-a-service (SaaS) technologies. Red had and Linux are visible players in the field of cloud computing, with many advantages over other modes of cloud computing. It is the OS of choice for Cloud Computing and has very little issues with inter-operability. But as with any service, this too comes with its own problems. Problems associates with discontinuous internet and the high degree of software programmers needed to develop these cloud computing technologies. With so many choices available to the end user, it is only adding towards the confusion and with the introduction of new low cost servers and virtual computing. Decision making can not be any more tougher.

All the hype doing the rounds that Grid computing is the next generation of the internet may just not make any sense. How can you just plain network personal computers and call it the next generation of Internet? This process of Grid computing has already been tested with the SETI@home project about five years ago. The new generation of distributed computing is said to connect home computers to weather and tidal sensors. It is going to make computing a utility just like all the other utilities. The same thing that is happening right now with cloud computing. The Global Grid Forum is working towards making this a reality. It has to be admitted that this is certainly a mammoth task, with unending standardizations and the process of convincing people to actually take part in this is going to be unrealistically difficult.

Networking the already networked world and designing a software which can use all the unused processing power to solve scientific questions will raise new problems of its own. Problems which we all have seen in movies like Eagle eye and Die Hard 4. Where the villain gets control of the government systems and controls everything. Imagine a virus spreading simultaneously through the millions of computers connected in a grid. The kind of damage it can do is completely untenable. The data that this Hacker will have access to without even trying is enormous threat to each and every person on the grid. Imagine all the computing power at the Hackers disposal once it gets hold of a Grid. Just an assurance that no hacker can take advantage of this grid is not going to help, because we all know how that goes. No matter how secure a defense the Grid computing software is going to put, there will always be a way for the Hacker to get access to all the systems. Opening up storage and computing power along with content is going to make it a Hackers heaven and everyone is going to have access to this Holy Grail.

Reading classic novels is a truly enjoyable experience because they are set in a different time period. It’s not uncommon for book lovers to have a collection of classic novels in book form. Some classic novels are not easily available as the published version is run out of stock.

Now classic literature novels are available for free in the form of e-books. These e-books are available in internet sites where you can download them without registration. You can find literature novels belonging to various time periods, beginning from the 13th Century till the 19th Century. In fact, you can actually trace the evolution of literary works over the centuries beginning with Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, The Works of Shakespeare, Milton, Jane Austin Charlotte Bronte Charles Dickens, Abbey Church, James Joyce, Herman Melville and much more. It’s not just works like these that you can read, you can read some of the most popular poems, essays and short stories that were written in the past centuries and gain an insights into the life and surroundings of that time period. For example, you can select works of the renaissance period and selectively read out prominent authors of that period like Edmund Spenser, Robert Greene, Christopher Marlowe, Samuel Daniel, Thomas Nashe, Sir Philip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh by downloading their works in e-book format.

Ebooks have made the best of English and American classics available for everyone to read and enjoy. No longer is access to such works restricted because of publishing house stock or regional availability. Since they are available online, they can be read by anyone, at their own convenience, without any spending. This is one of the biggest advantages of free e-books. They do not cost at all, but you gain the satisfaction of enjoying them over and over again as you can read them anytime online.

Gone are the days when you could master Mario and feel like you have mastered animated gaming. Just setting up a high score was considered to be competition, without any means of actually one on one competition. Games have developed so much that normal PCs do not provide the kind of graphic requirements that these games require. After the developing of these high processing power demanding games, developers have set their sight to online gaming.

Online gaming set players from around the world with each other and also let you create teams, not just in your local cyber gaming parlor. The most famous online multiplayer game would be Half Life. This game set standards for gaming and pulled gamers into a world where they no longer had to set scores solely based upon number. Now player set scores by killing each other on the war field crashing into each other. The ultimate victory is only when the other player looses and gets humiliated. Online gaming requires the games to be installed on both the sides interested in playing the game. While playing online, only each player’s actions are sent across the internet connection and not the entire game is streamed. This saves a lot of bandwidth and can easily run on a 256 Kbps connection. This is one of the reasons that it took off so soon after its introduction in the year 2003. Real time strategy games are another favorite, Warhammer and World of Warcraft being the giants in this arena. World of Warcraft amassed itself a huge fan following.
