Software piracy is a serious matter that many don’t take into account. Every minute someone is using illegal software that they did not purchase. In 1995 a study by the Software Publishers Association reported that over 14 billion dollars was lost due to piracy! This number has nearly tripled as of 2010. Measures are being taken to catch those who are involved in this matter such as using tracking device to see where the software is being passed around or copied to.

The legal penalty of this is just as bad. According to the United States Copyright Act, software piracy is a civil matter. This can lead to a person or group with being charged up to $100,000 in damages for each one found that is illegal. About $300,000 can be tacked on as a fine as well as being in prison for you to 10 years! This maybe harsh, but there are good reasons behind this.

The consequences of these actions are high because of the hard work that goes into developing the software. Big potions of creators earnings go into make the programs as well the writers and programmers also contribute to making the software becoming a reality. Therefore, they are entitled to fair compensation. Think of it this way, something that took you months or years was out on the market, wouldn’t you want others to buy your products?

Ways that a person can help with software piracy is not to accept it at all. If someone tries to give it to you for any reason, try not to have any parts of it. Remember that it’s against the law and you will pay a higher price! If you currently own any at this time, get rid of it as soon as possible. Don’t become that person keeping the illegal cycle going.
